Project Compassion Starts Teen and Young Adult Support
Teams for People Living with Cancer thanks to a
Grant from the Lance Armstrong Foundation
Project Compassion has received a grant from the Lance
Armstrong Foundation to create volunteer caregiving Support Teams for children,
teens and families living with cancer and to involve children and teens, and
young adults in volunteering to support people living with cancer.
These teams will be called: Support
Teams for Life. Project
Compassion and 30 other community, non-profit organizations from across the
country received Lance Armstrong Foundation grants to help people with the
physical, emotional and practical challenges of cancer.
“This Lance Armstrong Foundation grant will play a
vital part in the growing and developing Project Compassion’s Support Team
Initiative,” said James L. Brooks, Executive Director.
“We are honored and excited to be among such an amazing group of
recipients who all share a passion for helping people with cancer.”
Support Teams for Life will provide practical, emotional
and spiritual caregiving support for children, teens and families living with
cancer. Using a team approach,
volunteers of all ages will pool their talents, creativity, leadership and time to offer much more support than one
volunteer can provide alone. Support
may include friendly visiting, respite, transportation and meal preparation.
Teams may also use talents in the arts, computer research and advocacy to
nurture survivorship. Teams will take a comprehensive, creative and coordinated
approach to meeting caregiving needs.
“We are pleased to support
Project Compassion in its efforts to improve the quality of life of cancer
survivors and their loved ones,” said Andy Miller, associate director of
public health at the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
“Together, we are helping people with cancer live strong.”
